Portfolio Hosting Options
There are many different options available for hosting a professional portfolio, and each one has its own advantages and disadvantages. After researching different platforms, I chose to compare Behance, Adobe Portfolio, WordPress, Wix, and Squarespace. All five can be used to showcase creative work, but they differ in customization, cost, ease of use, and how much control the creator has over their portfolio.
Behance is a popular portfolio platform created specifically for people in creative fields. One of its biggest advantages is that it allows artists, photographers, designers, and other creators to showcase their work while also connecting with a larger creative community. It is relatively easy to use and can help your work get discovered by people who might not otherwise find it. However, Behance does not offer as much control over branding and website design. Since everyone is using the same platform, it can also be more difficult to make your portfolio feel completely unique.
Adobe Portfolio is another strong option, especially for people who already use Adobe Creative Cloud. It allows users to create a professional-looking portfolio without needing much website-building experience. It also integrates well with other Adobe products and allows users to connect a custom domain. The downside is that customization is more limited than a platform such as WordPress. It is great for displaying creative work, but it may not be the best choice for someone who wants to build a larger or more complex website.
WordPress offers much more freedom and customization. Users can choose from thousands of themes and plugins and have control over their branding, layout, pages, and other website features. A WordPress portfolio can also grow into a larger professional or business website over time. One disadvantage is that WordPress has a steeper learning curve. Depending on how the website is set up, users may also need to pay for a domain, hosting, themes, or plugins and maintain updates themselves.
Wix is another website builder that can be used to create a portfolio. One of its biggest advantages is its visual editor, which makes designing a website relatively simple even without coding experience. Wix also offers many templates and allows creators to customize the appearance of their sites. However, some of its better features require a paid plan, and having so many design options can become overwhelming. It also does not provide the same level of control that someone can have with a self-hosted WordPress website.
Squarespace is known for clean and professional website designs, making it a good option for photographers, designers, and other visual creators. It provides templates, hosting, and website management tools in one platform, which makes maintaining a portfolio easier. The disadvantages are that Squarespace requires a paid subscription and does not offer as much flexibility as WordPress when it comes to advanced customization.
After comparing the five options, WordPress would work best for me. I like having the ability to customize my website and make my portfolio represent my own style rather than having it look like another profile on a larger platform. Since I am studying digital media, I also think there is value in building the website myself because the website can become an example of my skills in addition to displaying my other projects. WordPress requires more work than some of the other options, but the additional freedom and ability to continue expanding the website make it the best choice for my portfolio.
